Edward Grady
Artist Biography
Born in Rochester, NY, Edward Grady spent his formative years in New York and Pennsylvania. He earned his B.A. in in Art in 1971 and his M.A. in Education/Art in 1976 from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. While attending Fisk, he completed summer museum internships at the Smithsonian Institute and the Detroit Institute of Art. During the summer of 1970, he attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Massachusetts. While there, he was strongly influenced by world-renowned artist Jacob Lawrence. Upon completion of his M.A., Grady completed a year's internship at the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum in Rochester, New York.
After his internship, Grady accepted the position of Curator of Exhibitions and Education at the Museum of African American Life and Culture at Bishop College in Dallas, TX. He also taught studio, art history and art appreciation courses at the college. After leaving Bishop, Grady taught in two Montessori schools in Dallas for ten years. For 23 years, Grady served as the Assistant Curator for the Melvin B. Tolson Black Heritage Center at Langston University in Langston, OK. While at Langston, he also taught art courses in the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences and Art Appreciation in the University's Honors Program. He retired from this position in June 2015.
Grady has exhibited his work most recently in the VOICES exhibition, Myriad Gardens, Oklahoma City, 2023; ArtNow 2021, Oklahoma Contemporary, Oklahoma City, 2021; and with Inclusion in Art, Spirit of Art, Oklahoma Hall of Fame | Gaylord-Pickens Museum, Oklahoma City, 2020.
