Erick Perry
Takes of Village Project Summary:
Takes of Village serves as a snapshot of small-town America, focusing specifically on the southwestern Oklahoma region of the United States. The work serves as an autoethnography of the photographer’s homeland, as he returned to capture the environment from which he was raised 10 years after initially moving away.
Developed as a series of black and white analog images, the work presents the contrasts and commonalities of humans through the lens of a particular place, the Usonian countryside.
Playing off the proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” the work is meant to encourage viewers in questioning their own upbringings, their influences and the things they find mundane to help identify the underlying importance of everyday life experiences.
Erick was awarded an Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition Artist Creative Projects Grant for this photography project, and this exhibition is part of a collaboration with the University of Central Oklahoma’s Melton Gallery and Curator Carrie Kouts.
