Joan Wegener
Artist Biography & Statement
Joan Wegener, also known as Joan of Art, is an artist and teacher residing in Oklahoma City. She works in a variety of media including oils, watercolor, and occasionally sculpture. Her love of art began at an early age and was encouraged by her grandmother, a self-taught artist. She received her B.A. in Fine Art and Masters of Education from the University of Central Oklahoma. After teaching art for many years in public and private schools, she left teaching full time to pursue her career as an artist. In 2001, she opened the Art House, a private studio, where students of all ages can express themselves while developing art technique.
“In my paintings I strive to show the beauty I see in nature. This show consists of many commonly found and tropical botanicals and florals rendered in fine detail. I am inviting the viewer to observe more closely the world around them. When we look closer, we notice the intricate patterns, colors and shapes. As climate change more greatly affects our weather and environment, I am attempting to record the natural world before it changes and these plants become endangered. As stewards of the earth, it is important for us to pay attention to our world as it is continually changing and I believe it is up to us to prevent its demise. I paint because I must. I believe all people have an innate need to create, not only for its self-expression but for the healing and personal growth that results. I strive to foster these traits in my students and for the world in which we live.”
Joan’s work was featured in our Winter 2022 Group Exhibition, on view November 1, 2022 - January 31, 2023.
