Artist Biography

Shyanne Dickey is a senior at Oklahoma State University She is a figurative oil painter; her subject matter is African American women farmers in western Kansas. Her work has been regionally exhibited at OSU Gardiner Gallery in Stillwater, OK; 21c Museum Hotel in Oklahoma City; OSU Orange Gallery in Stillwater; Momentum 2021, Oklahoma City and Tulsa; OSU Annual Student Juried Exhibition, Stillwater; and the Tulsa Race Massacre Exhibition, Tulsa. Her work has been awarded several prizes: first place at the “Celebration of Black Lives” Exhibition at OSU; Honorable Mention at Momentum 2021; second places in the 2D division and 3D division for the OSU Student Juried Art Exhibition; and most recently, as one of three Spotlight Artists in Momentum 2022.

Shyanne’s work is heavily influence by African American heritage; she is digging deep into rich ancestorial history that has not often been shared. The idea of celebrating the “Exodusters” (Ex-slaves that migrated to Kansas during the nineteenth century, as part of the Exoduster Movement or the Exodus of 1879) she connects with her five-times great grandmother who serves as the matriarch for her family’s success. Her work depicts her family focusing on her mother and sisters, often shown in royal clothing and historical collaged surroundings.
