Harper Barlow
Artist Statement
My name is Harper, I am a junior at Yukon High School. If there is one thing to know about me...I have a very strong passion for helping make our world a better place! You may say "what can a 15 year old kid even do anyways." If there is one thing I have learned, it is that, no matter your age or size (physical, financial or emotional), you can do anything you put your mind to! When I was in the 3rd grade and running for Student Council, I told my mom that I needed a slogan and she proposed a quote by the singer Jewel, "In the end only KINDNESS matters.¨"
Since then, that quote has really stuck with me!! I have noticed that in many bad situations that go on around me, if someone would have had a bit more kindness and compassion that situation could have gone very differently. I have tried to do the best I can to BE KIND and have the biggest impact I can.
Last Spring, my Aunt asked me if I wanted to join the Infant Crisis Services Summer Teen Volunteer Program and I instantly jumped on the idea of getting to help. Soon after I applied I received an email that said when I began the program I would need to donate either 1,000 diapers or $100. I thought to myself "Harper" you are going to raise way more than that and set my goal of 5,000 diapers! As we all know good diapers are quite pricey, so I decided to find a way to raise enough money to get the diapers, but how? Not long afterwards, my mom asked me if I'd thought of any ideas. I had just finished creating art for my school's virtual art show. My collection was growing and there were no more places to hang my art. My mom suggested that I sell my art to raise money to purchase the diapers and...now here we are! To date, I have raised over $3,800 for Infant Crisis Services. All the art sold is hand painted by me and 100% of the profits go to ICS.
When I am not creating art, I can be found running Varsity Cross Country/Track for the Yukon Millers, dancing competitively at a local studio, and volunteering throughStudent Council and National Honors Society.
Harper’s work was featured in our Spring 2021 Group Exhibition, on view March 5 - August 1, 2021. The gallery is proud to support her as she will be donating 100% of sales proceeds to Infant Crisis Services.
