Heidi Sophia Ghassempour
Artist Biography
Heidi Ghassempour is an Oklahoma City based mixed media artist. She graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2015 with a Bachelors in Studio Art with her focus in Drawing and Printmaking. Her artwork is inspired by the human experience, the connection between humanity and the natural world, and the complexities derived from that relationship. Her previous works have focused on the correlation between nature and the universe, and how humanity generally disregards it. Her current body of work explores the perspective of the omniscient observer, and their experience as a part of the kinship between nature, the universe, and the physical body and mind.
Artist Statement
My current series began as a spur of the moment study to release frustration and anxiety. It has since become an ongoing exploration of human emotion, connection/disconnection, energy, and the conscious and unconscious mind.
During the process of creating these works I keep planning to a minimum. In doing so, I am not only able to act on impulse and exercise my subconscious mind, but I’ve found I’m able to view the end result as somewhat of an outsider. I am interested in the idea of these entities being suspended in space, acting as planetary bodies of sorts; Drawing connection to the nature of the human experience relative to the universe. I imagine these scenes taking place inside one’s mind upon experiencing or recalling certain events or emotions. The atmosphere, to me, is reminiscent of when you try to picture something in your head and the images just sort of float there in pieces, unable to form what your brain knows it remembers. However, the emotions connected to the image or experience can be felt and recalled vividly, sometimes without effort.
