Malcolm Zachariah
Artist Statement
I am a bridge-builder making connections between art and science with nature as my guide. I experiment in several media including pen and ink drawing, watercolors, ceramics, printmaking, and over 25 years of kirigami (cut and folded paper) sculpture. I find drawing and linework to be a common foundation, from sketchbooks to 3D watercolors. Recently, I have been making successively larger kirigami installations in collaboration with printmaker Emma Difani. Each medium teaches me something different about the elements of art, and I tend toward distilling biological forms into abstract geometries. I am often concerned with the intersection of planes, as exemplified by my kirigami creations.
