Shyanne’s work is heavily influenced by her African American heritage; she digs deep into rich ancestral history that has not often been shared. Through the idea of celebrating the “Exodusters” (former slaves who migrated to Kansas during the nineteenth century, as part of the Exoduster Movement or the Exodus of 1879), she connects with her five-times great grandmother who has served as the matriarch for her family’s success. Shyanne’s work depicts her family, focusing on her mother and sisters, often shown in royal clothing and surroundings collaged with historical, archival imagery and family photos.
