Hodgeman Gothic is a painting of my mother, Lisa Dickey, that was inspired by Grant Woods’ famous painting, American Gothic. The concept here is playful and bright, showing the joy of success and wealth through farming. This piece holds value to my family; the land depicted in the painting is the first land my mother bought in Hodgeman County in 2009. The longhorn and black bull are enlarged to represent the first cattle she purchased, which ultimately produced a plentiful herd. The sky’s drip effect pays tribute to the oil rigs located on our land. The limestone home in the background is treasured by our family because it is the home that my grandfather helped build with the man who sold my mother the land and mineral rights. My grandfather, Wilburn Bradshaw, was not only a farmer, but was also skilled in masonry work – a skill which helped generate supplemental income for my family.
As viewers approach the painting, Lisa’s figure is enlarged and shown in a white fur coat and hat with amethyst jewelry. She is smiling and full of energy. This painting reflects the exuberant personality of my mom: when people come and meet her, they are filled with the love and joy exuded by her spirit. The purpose of the painting is to honor her passion for life and people.
